The SuprEsser Difference - More Than Just De-Essing

Oxford SuprEsser plugin
The Oxford SuprEsser goes beyond standard de-essing—it’s a dynamic frequency control powerhouse.

Whether you’re smoothing sibilant vocals, controlling harsh instrument tones, or tightening the low-end, SuprEsser works dynamically, only reducing problem frequencies when necessary while leaving the rest of your mix untouched.

What sets SuprEsser apart is its flexibility—three distinct plugins for specific tasks, a floating threshold that adapts to performance dynamics, and precise control over the full frequency range, from 20Hz to 20kHz.

Key Features

Floating Threshold for Automatic Level Tracking

Working with a vocalist who moves from soft, breathy whispers to full-throttle screams? A static threshold won’t cut it. That’s why SuprEsser’s floating threshold automatically adapts to your performance’s dynamic range.

Whether your singer is barely whispering or belting out, SuprEsser ensures smooth, transparent de-essing and frequency management; no manual adjustments required. This means consistent control, even with the most extreme dynamic shifts.

Adaptive, Transparent Processing

With split-band and full-band modes, the SuprEsser adapts to your workflow. Split-band mode applies dynamic EQ only to the targeted frequency range, preserving surrounding frequencies, while full-band mode maintains phase coherence for subtle broadband control.

The look-ahead detection ensures that even fast, transient spikes are caught without distortion, delivering clean, natural results every time.

Side Chain Monitoring

The plugin includes side-chain EQ with listen mode, allowing you to audition only what the processor is reacting to. Adjustable attack and release times provide creative flexibility, whether you need lightning-fast suppression for sharp consonants or a slower response to smooth out harsher tones.

Combined with Sonnox’s pristine DSP algorithms, the SuprEsser is equally at home on lead vocals, overheads, string sections, or mastering chains.

    Oxford SuprEsser for vinyl mastering

Posted by Daniel Krieger / SST on 11th Aug 2025

Most recommended for vinyl mastering. Difficult sibilants from vocals, prominent open HiHats etc. can be tamed sensitively while the overall sound image can be maintained. Strong transients can be controlled individually if necessary. In case group two instances of this plugin after another in your daw. Particularly the 'Advanced controls' section is super helpful and at last make this plugin uniquely ideal for vinyl mastering. The automatic level tracking is very clever: For recordings with exceed dynamic range the character of vocals, for example, can be maintained better. Necessary, though, is to observe the track's beginning when using the 'Level tracking': Initial transients at a track's start might be affected more than desired. Summing up, this plugin imo is gold for vinyl mastering. I love it.
